The visionary, Dr James McCord, opened McCord Zulu Hospital in May 1909 to provide medical care to the Zulu people of Durban, South Africa. This small, efficient hospital now provides top quality, affordable healthcare for all population groups. The hospital is a centre for health education, training and research locally and internationally, and has an impact well beyond its size and location.
Under the leadership of CEO Dr Helga Holst, the hospital is increasingly known for its compassionate care and high standards in healthcare delivery and for being at the forefront of medical advances. In recent years, the hospital has been involved with ground breaking clinical programs and research in the field of HIV clinical care. With support from funders and donors (including LSA) the Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART) and Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) programs have produced tremendous results and have attracted the attention of medical personnel and researchers from South Africa and around the world.
McCord has historically played a crucial role in the training of doctors, nurses and midwives, the majority of whom have been black South Africans. It has afforded them opportunities denied elsewhere in the country, particularly in the 1930s and 1940s. The dedication and excellence of the medical and nursing staff is widely acknowledged and is attributed to the hospital’s strong focus on staff development, service and social justice. The ethos and culture of the hospital, while having a strong Christian focus, is acknowledged by people of all faiths as unique.
LSA and McCord Zulu Hospital believe that no child with HIV/AIDS should be turned away because they cannot afford treatment or admission. Your partnership and support cover the costs of admission and monthly ARVs for those children who have parents who are not able to afford them.
